about

"Keep holding on, dont stop, knowing that we’re all just stumbling around trying to do the best with what we've got"

This song is an audio from a live video. Watch it here: youtu.be/GkdBi0vgV0g

Reeling from the death of our dear friend Jayne from depression on July 24th I spent a few days in the excellent company of Eve Goodman and Ben Ford. One evening I decided to teach them a new song I'd written and a few hours later they'd not only learnt it but Ben had recorded this little video. It's remained a companion in the last few strange and hard weeks and we wanted to share it with you. Thankyou so much Ben and Eve for your beautiful talent and bringing this song alive. I wrote it in early June, after hearing about yet more suicides this year. It's based on two quotes. Firstly from Anthony Bourdain: “If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.” And then from Patti Smith who I saw in concert that same week who said, "We are free. Put up your hands, they are empty, see you are free. As long as you have a sandwich in your pocket and somewhere to sleep you’ll be alright."

This song is a call for us all to hold on, and to learn compassion by walking in each others' shoes. Please share to those who might need to hear it. You can download it and pay what you want.

lyrics

may we all cross the river
walking in the shoes of another
breaking bread with the Other on the ground
may we all keep on turning
peeling off the lenses of our learning
burying our weapons much deeper in the ground
reach out your hands
if they are empty
this is freedom
may we reach them somewhere deeper
may we all cross the river
may we keep on holding on
keep holding on, dont stop
knowing that we’re all just stumbling around
trying to do the best with what we've got
may we all reach another
hold each other up when we are bolder
do what we can for this holy union
